Truancy Prevention

The overall goal of Consejo’s Truancy Prevention Program is to support Latino youth to succeed in school. Youth participants receive tutoring, mentoring, recreational activities, life-skills development, leadership development, college preparation, substance abuse prevention, domestic violence education, sexual assault prevention, and are trained to organize and lead an Annual Latino Youth Leadership Conference. Reducing truancy leads to improved academic performance, a stronger focus on educational goals and capacity to stay in school until graduation. Consejo’s Truancy Prevention Program strives for the following quantifiable outcomes:

  • Overall reduction of truancy rates and school drop outs

  • Overall reduction of truancy hearings and involvement with criminal justice

  • Improved grades with capacity to advance to the next grade level

  • Increased involvement in school-based activities and community attachment

  • Increased family stability and less conflict at home

  • Increased self esteem and social skills

  • Increased capacity to advance to graduation
