Prevention Programs

  1. Teen Peer Advocacy Program
Consejo's Teen Peer Advocacy Program is the only program in Washington State that, in partnership with Seattle and King County School districts, provides outreach, training and prevention for both female and male adolescents around the issues of dating and domestic violence, sexual harassment and sexual assault in both English and Spanish.

  2. Effective Parenting Classes
Effective Parenting Classes at Consejo are ongoing, twelve-week groups providing education in child abuse prevention, child development, sex education, overcoming Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and culture shock, healing from both witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence, coping with family separation anxiety as well as enhancing parenting skills.

  3. Education, Outreach & Training
Consejo's Domestic Violence Program also provides domestic violence outreach, workshops and training in Spanish to local Latino community members, service providers, professionals and religious leaders. Research confirms that most survivors do not immediately turn to professional advocates for assistance, but rather to friends and contacts within their community networks. However, within immigrant communities, the response survivors receive from these informal support systems is often rife with erroneous or misleading information. If survivors receive informed, accurate information; assistance with safety planning; and appropriate referrals when they first seek assistance, it will increase their safety and improve their long-term outcomes. Therefore, any truly effective community education strategy must necessarily target not only domestic violence survivors, but also the community members they turn to for help.

Providing training and workshops in Spanish on domestic violence to local Latino community members, service providers, professionals and religious leaders strengthens the overall community response to domestic violence as a societal problem. This community education strategy increases awareness and improves community response to domestic violence, thereby strengthening Latina survivors' informal support networks within their own cultural community.
