Summary

Consejo’s Domestic Violence Program provides quality intervention, prevention and outreach services for non- or limited English-language proficient Latina survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes. In addition, as part of a holistic approach, Consejo also offers linguistically accessible, culturally relevant community education and outreach. This community education strategy results in an increased probability that battered Latinas will also receive meaningful assistance when they turn to informal social networks for support.

In accordance with WAC 388-61A-0145, all of Consejo’s domestic violence services follow the advocacy-based counseling model of service delivery for survivors, with the “primary focus on safety planning and on empowerment of the client through reinforcing the client's autonomy and self-determination.” The more information a domestic violence survivor has, the more likely it is that she will be able to make choices that enhance her safety. Decisions based on false or incomplete information can increase the risks to a woman’s physical or legal safety. A recent study of battered immigrant women showed that simply becoming more informed about domestic violence laws and services in the United States is a significant turning point for a number of immigrant women who are dealing with intimate partner violence.

Consejo’s Rural Domestic Violence Program assures that services currently offered in King also available for survivors in Eastern Washington as well. Consejo currently has satellite offices in Yakima, the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla.
